“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes”
- Mark Twain
I should be used to this feeling by now, but moving out tomorrow reminds me exactly of how I felt when I moved out for the first time last fall. There are, however, a few key differences. This time, I will be farther from home than ever, figuratively and literally. I will be without an immediate support environment, no orientation events, no nothing, everything needs to be constructed from the ground up.
And yet, this is the only way forward. The comfort zone is the zone of decadence, the zone where one has peaked, and one certainly does not peak before their 20s. Self-reflection, taking things slowly, and living in the moment are to be praised, but not when they are used as a virtue signal regarding one’s own character.
It makes sense why people say that they figure things out as they go, because they choose not to focus on the future. The future is uncertain, and uncertainty causes people to shy away and hide in their comfort zone. Then does there exist any reason to plan for the future? Yes, to a certain extent. The best teachers give pointers to their students and let them figure the rest out. I think a similar approach lies here. We may plan out a few milestones, a few things that we would hope to happen if all goes well, and let it all play out. The best part is not knowing what comes next.
